Five frameworks, one comparison
Every funnel framework is a lens: it highlights some parts of the buyer journey and blurs others. Picking the right one is mostly about matching the lens to your business model. Here is how the five models in the FunnelForge generator compare.
AIDA — Attention, Interest, Desire, Action
The original, from 19th-century advertising theory. AIDA describes a psychological progression: notice, get curious, want, act. It is brilliant for messaging and ad creative because each stage is a copywriting job — the headline earns attention, the body builds interest and desire, the CTA drives action. Its weakness is structural: it says nothing about retention, and "desire" is hard to measure. Best for: campaigns, landing pages, sales scripts.
TOFU / MOFU / BOFU — Top, Middle, Bottom of Funnel
The content marketer's model. TOFU (awareness: blogs, social, video), MOFU (consideration: guides, webinars, comparisons), BOFU (decision: trials, demos, consultations). It maps beautifully onto content calendars and lead nurturing because each layer has obvious content types and metrics. Its weakness: three buckets are coarse — "MOFU" hides a lot of distinct buyer behavior. Best for: content strategy, SEO planning, email nurture.
SaaS — the product-led funnel
Discovery, Signup, Onboarding, Activation, Habit, Expansion, Renewal, Referral. Built around the product doing the selling: the critical moment is activation, when a user first gets real value. Metrics are product analytics (activation rate, retention curves) rather than campaign metrics. Best for: software with free trials or freemium tiers. Less useful when humans close every deal.
E-commerce — the transaction funnel
Discovery, Browse, Product view, Cart, Checkout, Purchase, Loyalty. Ruthlessly practical: every stage is a page or event you can measure in analytics. Optimization here is concrete — image galleries, reviews, shipping transparency, one-page checkout. Best for: online stores. The post-purchase loyalty stage is where repeat revenue compounds.
B2B sales — the sales-led funnel
Prospecting, Qualification, Discovery, Proposal, Negotiation, Closed won, Onboarding, Renewal. This is the pipeline view dressed as a funnel: stages track what the sales team does with each opportunity. Qualification (often MQL/SQL handoff) is the hinge the whole model turns on. Best for: high-ticket sales with human reps and long cycles.
Which should you use?
| Your situation | Start with |
|---|---|
| Writing ads or landing pages | AIDA |
| Planning blog / SEO / email content | TOFU/MOFU/BOFU |
| Free trial or freemium product | SaaS |
| Online store | E-commerce |
| Sales team closes deals | B2B |
| Teaching marketing basics | AIDA, then TOFU/MOFU/BOFU |
Nothing stops you from combining them: many teams run TOFU/MOFU/BOFU for content and B2B stages for the sales pipeline simultaneously. Generate each version with the funnel stage generator and see which vocabulary your team actually adopts — the one people use in meetings is the right one.
